Like many of us, Toni Blackman has struggled to put herself first and her tendency to overdo and overextend led to a severe burnout when she was in her 40s.
The serial entrepreneur – she’s a cultural strategist, artist, speaker, and Hip Hop’s first U.S. Ambassador – and longtime New York City dweller has been juggling work and play since her teens.
“Being busy was how I coped with emotions and disappointments I didn’t have language for. I was performing, working as a teaching artist, traveling constantly, hosting people at my home, and in back-to-back unhealthy relationships,” recalls Blackman.
The Howard University alumna says her burnout symptoms included:
- Anxiety
- Acid reflux
- Eczema
- Lack of appetite
- Difficulty concentrating and focusing
- The desire to isolate oneself from friends, family, and social circle.
- Poor sleep hygiene: insomnia and difficulty waking up/get out of bed.
“Looking back, it was nervous system overload. My body was screaming long before I listened,” says Blackman.
“I remember going to Senegal and sleeping nine hours a day for nine days straight. I truly thought I might die. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just being tired.”
Psychology Today defines burnout as a state of emotional, mental, and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress. Although commonly caused by problems at work, burnout can also occur due to stress in other areas of life, such as parenting, caretaking, or romantic relationships.
According to Oludara Adeeyo, a mental health therapist in Los Angeles, California, other signs of burnout include:
- Low self-esteem and poor self-image.
- Lack of energy and feelings of exhaustion even when adequate sleep is obtained.
- Lack of interest in things you once enjoyed, such as hobbies and other leisure activities.
- Depressive feelings and thoughts that may come with suicidal ideation and excessive crying.
- Physical health issues such as acne, rapid weight gain or loss, cardiovascular issues (high blood pressure, heart palpitations), hair loss, and the development of an autoimmune disease.
